Notes from the Mayor

I am disappointed to report that the Town’s acquisition of the Shalimar Yacht Basin is not in the cards at this time. There may be other bidders for this property and I really have no idea what the future will hold. For now, it remains a private enterprise, open to the boating public.

Our storm water mitigation efforts are ongoing. In that regard, we continue to coordinate with Okaloosa County requesting they address the courthouse annex pond issues. Within the next couple of months, you may see our Polyengineering representatives inspecting the drainage around your property. Following this inspection, some of you may receive letters requesting you to restore/improve/construct drainage swales on your property. Of course, the town will assist if our help is requested.

Hopefully I don’t need to remind you that the Shalimar town government exists to serve its residents. If you have issues or ideas, please let us know.

Gary Combs, Mayor

Notes from the Special Services Commissioner

SPRING YARD OF THE QUARTER

It is so pretty everywhere here in Shalimar, I would like to nominate the whole Town!! Most of the places are clean and orderly, and the azaleas are in full bloom, which really adds to the beauty. There are some outstanding yards, though. The prettiest one right now is at 38 Shalimar Drive.

Other places to mention are at 906 Sara, 2561 Palm Shores, 911 Sunset Bay Court and 214 Snug Harbor (it is only a little yard but very nicely laid out.). The commercial properties along Eglin Parkway (from the corner of Shalimar Drive to Guiseppi's) and even the Yacht Basin on Old Ferry look clean and tended. Keep up the good work.

Ursel Behnken, Shalimar Special Services Commissioner

Notes from the Police Department

Spring is upon us, bringing an influx of tourists to the Gulf Coast. During the next few months please take extra care while traveling in the neighborhoods and on Eglin Parkway. Also, burglarizes and criminal mischief crimes rise due to this influx. Remember to lock you vehicles and homes. Report any suspicious activity to 651-7400 so an officer can be notified.

Our non-emergency phone, 225-1272, has proved to be a valuable “anytime” service. Our officers are receiving positive feedback on answering the concerns of our residents. Please remember that you can call this same number if you need assistance getting home after having too much to drink, if your vehicle breaks down outside the city limits, or you need other assistance, and a Shalimar Officer will come and assist you.

I want to thank the residents on complying with our parking on roadways ordinance; we have seen a steady decrease in complaints. Please call ahead if you are having overflow guests that may need to occupy the street during their visit.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe summer and don’t hesitate to call or come by the office to address any concern(s).

Chief John E. Cash

Reminder: Shalimar ordinances state that no person shall throw or place any debris in any drainage ditches, drainage easements, catch basins, or any part of the storm water management system. It is also illegal to dispose of any pollutants that may end up in any of these areas. These include yard trash, earthen fill, and all trash/litter. Please notify Town Hall if you observe any illegal dumping in our storm water drainage systems – let’s stay high and dry and help keep coastal waters clean!

FEMA Flood Insurance Reminders

Residents can stop by the town hall and check out flood maps for specific flood zone determinations.

Copies of elevation certificates for structures located in special flood zones should be on file at Town Hall and applications and instructions for elevation certification are also available.

Notes from the Town Manager

We’ve been taking some calls recently reporting dog walkers not picking up after pets. By Shalimar ordinance (there is a possible fine, and we don’t want that!), all pets being walked off of the owners property must have (and use) a bag or device for picking up their pet’s waste. Please avail yourself of the “dog-i-pot” bags along Shalimar Drive and in Cherokee park if you forget your own. It’s just common courtesy, and your pet is counting on you.

Mosquito season will be here in the next few weeks (night temperatures routinely above 67 degrees F) and now is the time to police your property for any items or areas that will hold standing water (rain or irrigation). The county will be spraying by truck between 5and 10pm on a routine schedule. Please go inside if you see the truck as they will not spray if people are obviously outside near the road or in front yards. If you see any areas containing standing water – please report them to town hall.

Notes from Town Hall

The 60th Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Shalimar is this year. We would like to have a small gathering in the park this spring to celebrate and have discussed including a Flea Market. We are polling residents to find out who would be interested in setting up a table at this Spring Flea Market. You could sell crafts, food, or the stuff you found during your Spring Cleaning that you don’t want to throw away but don’t want to keep around the house. This would be a great opportunity to make a little extra money for a group that your children may be a part of (Baseball, Boy/Girl Scout, Soccer, etc.). Our Flea Market would be similar to a neighborhood Yard Sale except that there would be a charge of $10 per table (residents will have first priority of where their stuff is set up). The money will be used for advertising and maybe a band (depending on how much participation we get). We would like to do this on April 28 (with a rain backup date of May 5) so if you are interested, please contact us by e-mail (shalimarflorida@earthlink.net) or phone (651-5723) by Friday, April 6 JUST TO LET US KNOW THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED. We will contact you before April 13 to let you know whether or not we will be doing this so you can gather up your goodies.
