Town of Shalimar

Tidbits -- September 2006

Notes from the Mayor

If you have been following our efforts to identify and resolve the Town’s problem flooding areas and you want more information, please attend the October 10 Town Commission meeting at 6:00. Polyengineering has completed the Town’s storm water analysis report and will formally present their recommendations during this meeting. If you’d like to review the report before the meeting, please stop by Town Hall or go to www.shalimarflorida.org.

The Town now officially owns the three vacant lots adjacent to the Town Hall. The Commission plans to use these lots for expanded parking for both Town Hall and Cherokee Park. Some cleanup of the lots has been accomplished; however, we plan to leave the area natural with NO expenditure for asphalt or concrete.

Soon you will all be able to enjoy gourmet coffee locally at either Cuppie’s Coffee or Starbucks. In the parking area of the former PK’s Pub, Cuppie’s will be the first to open. Starbucks, next to the Car Wash, should be open in early 2007.

As for The Shalimar Yacht Club condominium development project, I really don’t have an update. There are rumors that other development companies and even commercial marina operators are interested in purchasing the property. I can report that even the Town is considering making an offer to purchase the property using a low interest long-term bond to maintain the marina as a public enterprise operation. If the revenue can make the debt payment, the acquisition could be a long-term good deal for the Town and eventually fund a major portion of the Town’s annual operating budget.

Have you noticed anything out of the ordinary in the neighborhood? You have a really good Police force working for you, but they need your help. You’ll soon be provided a private cell phone number to personally contact the on-duty Shalimar policeman. For emergencies, you should still call 911, but if you just want to talk to one of your guys, please feel free to call.

Gary Combs, Mayor

Notes from the Police Department

The police department is investigating two car burglaries that occurred September 17th. Our detective is in the process of gathering leads to apprehend the burglar(s). The perpetrator(s) are targeting unlocked vehicles. It will only take 2 to 3 minutes to rummage through an unlocked vehicle before moving on to the next one. Please remember to lock your vehicles.

The police have a new department cell phone 225-1272. The phone will provide the residents an easy way to contact one of the policemen for non-emergency calls 24/7. We recently distributed magnets to all town residents and businesses with the new cell number and other important numbers.

Please greet our new part-time officer Steve Shadwell who also resides within the city limits.

Trick-or-treating will be on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 in the Shalimar Town Limits. Please refer to the local newspaper for information on other Halloween Festivities and times. We will have all of our officers in the neighborhoods and please say hi - each officer will be awarding a nice gift for best costume!

John Cash, Police Chief

CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES

The 2006 Shalimar Christmas Parade will start at 4:30 on December 12. After the parade will be a brief Commission Meeting followed by a small festive get together.

Notes from the Special Services Commissioner

YARD OF THE QUARTER

This quarter there were too many beautiful yards to choose from. Sunset Bay Court on the whole looks wonderful. A combined effort has been put into making the whole neighborhood outstanding. Barron Court is also worth mentioning. Very nice are the homes at 863 Brande Court, 903 Sara, and 850 Mande Court.

Several homes are already starting to decorate for Halloween and 876 Mande Court looks nice.

Keep up the good work for a beautiful Shalimar. For the next quarter ending in December we will look for the best decorated, most festive Christmas yard so keep working on your yards and keep the creative ideas coming.

Ursel Behnken, Special Services Commissioner

Flood and Hurricane Info

STANDARD HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE POLICIES DO NOT COVER LOSSES DUE TO FLOODS. The Town of Shalimar is a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program, which makes it possible for Shalimar property owners to obtain federally backed flood insurance. We currently enjoy a 10% reduction in the normal cost due to our Class rating. This insurance is available to any owner of insurable property (a building or its contents) in Shalimar. Tenants may also insure their personal property against flood loss.

The average annual premium for this insurance is approximately $250. The actual cost will vary depending on the amount of coverage and the degree of flood hazard. We urge persons who live or own property in the flood hazard areas to purchase flood insurance to protect themselves from losses due to flooding. This insurance is required in certain instances, such as the purchase of a home with a federally backed mortgage. Contact your insurance company or stop by the Town hall to browse through our Flood Library data.
