HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MAYOR
Good news – the town has selected a local Shalimar engineering firm, Polyengineering of Florida, to assist us with our engineering issues. Their initial tasking will be to determine root causes and potential solutions to storm water flooding in the town. As I am writing this, residual rain from Hurricane Rita is beating down on my roof, Eglin Parkway near McDonalds is already flooded, and our Police Chief, John Cash, is on the road with a camera taking photos of the town’s flood-prone areas. We do not promise to resolve hurricane-related storm surge flooding but, hopefully, we can mitigate most of the storm water runoff-related flooding. WE STILL NEED RESIDENT INPUT. If your house has ever been flooded, we need to know the details in writing. Please help us help you. Addressing storm water runoff issues continues to be a top priority for the Town of Shalimar. It’s now official…the Shalimar millage rate for 2005-2006 has been lowered from 2.7 to 2.4 mills. Despite property value increases, the town will be collecting 1.16% less than we did last year. Your overall rate has decreased 25% since 2000 and we hope to continue this trend. Please help Chief Cash and his officers ensure that we continue to have a safe 2005. If you see anything suspicious in your neighborhood, call town hall and let our guys check it out. Also, we recommend you lock your vehicle(s) even when it’s in your driveway and garage. If you are leaving the area for the holidays, please let us know and the police department will place more emphasis on security for your home. There is a house watch form on our web site for your convenience (www.shalimarflorida.org). I pray for a safe and secure Shalimar through the end of this terrible hurricane season! The news media continues to remind us of the less fortunate folks in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. If you would like information on how you can help, please contact Tina or Tom at Town Hall (651-5723). Gary Combs Mayor |

NOTES FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
During the last couple of weeks, we have been doing saturated patrols in our neighborhoods to deter speeders. To assist in these efforts, we have begun a study using a speed measuring device that calculates the speed, date, and times of each passing vehicle. The stats will help us identify the main areas where the speeding is occurring. The device was first placed on Old Ferry Road and will soon be moved to other main neighborhood streets.
The police department has hired a new part-time officer. William Curtis works on the weekends. He works in the Security Forces squadron on Eglin A.F.B. Please welcome him to the town when you see him on patrol.
I have an open door policy, so do not hesitate to stop at the police department to talk with me or any of the officers. We are open to ideas and suggestions to better serve our citizens.
