Town of Shalimar

Tidbits -- March 2003

Notes from the Mayor

Spring will soon be changing our beautiful foliage, and in addition to a new Town Commission beginning their watch in April, you will undoubtedly notice other upcoming changes around town.

Our town maintenance supervisor, Jeff Dowda, will be leaving us at the end of April to return to his hometown in South Carolina. Jeff has done yeoman work and been a friend to our residents for over seven years now. In addition to keeping our town clean and groomed, he's been with us through hurricanes, construction of our parks, and the remodeling of Town Hall. We'll miss him and wish him luck, health, and happiness in the future. Don't hesitate to thank him personally during the next couple of months, and lets give his replacement a hearty Shalimar welcome.

The curbing and paving of Clifford Drive and construction of a right turn lane at Cherokee Road and Eglin Pkwy should commence in April. Be alert for possible detours and construction activity in these areas.

The grant funded work on remodeling Cherokee Park will also be underway soon. Construction will include basketball and volleyball courts, exercise area, reconstruction of the jogging trail, and paving of a new entrance and exit road. Expect the park to be closed during much of this effort, and you should call Town Hall if you are unsure of the park's status.

Please note the rules for Spring Cleanup on the back of this newsletter and help us keep the HazMat out of the Spring Cleanup dumpsters. As always, give us a call and we will be more than happy to dispose of your HazMat properly.

Have a great Spring!

Mayor Gary Combs

Upcoming Events

March 11, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. — Town Commission Meeting

April 3, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. — Town Commission Meeting

Notes from Commissioner Henderson

It is with much sorrow that I pen these final words as your Commissioner of Special Projects. As you may know the Special Projects Commissioner is primarily responsible for planning parties so after the March meeting I hereby decree that we shall all go to the Mayor’s house for cocktails and food…just kidding.

March will be my final month to serve as a Shalimar Commissioner and I want to say thanks to our town staff, my fellow commissioners, and especially to Mayor Combs. We are a very small town by most standards but to keep things running smoothly it takes a great deal of time and dedication from all of these people. I also want to thank all the citizens that took the time to attend a meeting or just drop us a line to express your own feelings on issues.

Now, having said that, we need your input on two very important issues; first of all, the traffic problem on Gardner Drive seems to be getting worse in spite of the three stop signs that have been installed to try and divert traffic. Because of the number of small children and the volume of traffic, I fear there is a high probability of an accident. The second issue is the volume and speed of water traffic in the vicinity of Shalimar Yacht Basin. Again, I fear the likelihood of an accident is very high until something is done to slow down boats and personal water craft in this area. The Town Commission has the authority to take action on both of these issues but will only do so if they believe they are doing what the majority of the Shalimar residents want. Please contact Tina Smith or Tom Burns at Town Hall and let them know how you feel about these two issues. You can either call (651-5723) or e-mail (townhall@shalimarflorida.org). You will need to give them your address and phone number so they can verify that you are a Shalimar resident.

** PLEASE REMEMBER **

The Shalimar Town hall Conference Room and attached kitchen is available for meetings and gatherings at no charge. Call us if you are interested.

Notes from Chief Self and the Shalimar Police Department

The Shalimar Police Department is always striving to provide more and better service to the residents of our town. After over a year of service, part-time officer Michael Miller has moved on to other employment. He has already been replaced with new part-time officer Michael Woll. Michael will be in training for another week or so, and when you see him or any of your officers out on the road, take a second and introduce yourself. With full manning you should have no problem getting in touch with us should you need police services.

We have just been approved for a law enforcement grant and plan to use that money to purchase a bicycle for the police department. With the bicycle, the officers should be able to get better acquainted with the residents, (hopefully it will help us get or stay in shape!) and also get closer to Shalimar children.

Spring is coming so it may be a good time to remind your children of bicycle safety and also remember that wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle is now required by the State of Florida for riders 16 years old and under. If you have any questions you can stop by the Police Department or call us at 651-1115.

FEMA Flood Insurance Reminders

Residents can stop by the Town Hall and check out the new flood maps for specific flood zone determinations.

Copies of elevation certificates for structures located in flood zones are on file at Town Hall. Applications and instructions for elevation certification are also available.

Notes from the Staff

Reminder: Shalimar ordinances state that no person shall throw or place any debris in any drainage ditches, drainage easements, catch basins, or any part of the storm water management system. It is also illegal to dispose of any pollutants that may end up in any of these areas. These include yard trash, earthen fill, and all trash/litter. Please notify Town Hall if you observe any illegal dumping in our storm water drainage systems – let’s stay high and dry and help keep coastal waters clean!
