Town of Shalimar

Tidbits -- December 2002

Notes from the Mayor -

Please join us at 5 PM on Wednesday, December 11 at town hall for a workshop to discuss ideas and plans to upgrade the recreational aspects of Cherokee Park. Besides upgrading the walking trail and exercise stations, we are considering installation of separate basketball and volleyball courts. Plans call for rerouting the park entry and exit and expanding parking. Everyone’s input is welcome.

If you have not visited the Town’s website (www.shalimarflorida.org), please do. Our monthly meeting agendas are now maintained on the site along with more information than you can imagine. I think we have the most informative local governmental site in Florida. Our own Town administrative staff maintains/updates the site. Please send your praises to our Webmaster, Mrs. Tina Smith.

In the past, you’ve heard me praise our Police Department, and I continue to believe they are a great group of guys. We are truly fortunate and the envy of many other county municipalities. This envy does not stop at the Police Department. Please take the time to thank all our employees. Mr. Jeff Dowda is a maintenance marvel. Mr. Tom Burns’ management of routine operations makes the Commission job really enjoyable. And the administrative glue that holds all the departments together is Mrs. Tina Smith.

Please be safe and in the coming year I invite you to get involved and let us know what’s on your mind!

Happy Holidays and, Thanks

Gary Combs

Notes from Chief Self and the Shalimar Police Department

Hello,

I know, as do the other officers that work for you in Shalimar, that there is a parking problem on some of the streets in the town. Parking is not allowed on the side of any street or road in Shalimar. It causes problems with other traffic entering and exiting streets, causes a safety hazard between drivers and children playing on the street, and tears up the grass along the edge of the roadways.

We are currently working on a way to solve the problem of people parking on the side of the roads. Most of the violators are people visiting town residents, and either don't know where to park, or don't have room to park. The town is looking at several possible solutions to this problem, but I would like to ask each resident to do your part and let your guests know that they aren't supposed to park on the roadway.

Now there are exceptions to every rule. If you are having a large gathering or party and need to have guests park on the roadway for the occasion please call the police department and let us know. Things like this aren't normally a problem as long as we know ahead of time and can inform any residents that may call with a complaint. I would like to thank you in advance for your assistance with this matter.

Chief Charles Self
